MESCALERO, N.M. (February 9, 2017)—Inn of the Mountain Gods proves rock and roll is alive and well this March when legendary ‘70s rockers Three Dog Night take the stage Saturday, March 11. The next weekend sees platinum-selling rock band Daughtry perform on Friday, March 17 followed by ‘80s metal band Dokken rocking the crowd with special guest Lita Ford on Saturday, March 18.
Formed in 1967 around lead vocalists Cory Wells, Chuck Negron and Danny Hutton – the only original member who remains in the band today – Three Dog Night took over pop music with an indistinguishably smooth soft-rock sound and flawless vocal harmonies. The band was quick to find success with their self-titled debut album peaking at no. 11 on the Billboard 200 charts, eventually reaching platinum certification with more than one million albums sold.
The success continued throughout the band’s 15-year recording career as all but four of the bands 12 albums peaked in the top 30 of the Billboard 200 and reached Gold certification, most notably 1972’s “Seven Separate Fools” which peaked at no. 6. The band’s impressive streak of acclaimed albums was augmented by a record-setting streak of 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits featuring the no.1 singles “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “Joy to the World” and “Black and White.”
Daughtry was formed in 2005 following lead vocalist and songwriter Chris Daughtry’s shocking elimination from season five of American Idol. The band quickly released their debut self-titled album on RCA Records, which became the fastest selling rock album of all time on its way to quadruple platinum certification and a staggering 176 weeks on the Billboard 200.
With a definitive hard rock sound spearheaded by Daughtry’s signature vocals, the band continued to find prosperity. Their second album “Leave This Town” peaked at no .1 on the Billboard 200 before reaching Platinum certification, while 2011’s “Break the Spell” reached no. 8 on the Billboard 200 with a Gold certification and their most recent release “Baptized” debuted at no. 6 on the Billboard top 100 charts before selling more than 90,000 copies, bolstered by the single “Waiting for Superman.”
After wrapping up the writing and recording of their yet to be named the fifth album, Daughtry will be hitting the road on tour, where they will perform at Inn of the Mountain Gods on Friday, March 17. Tickets start at $35.
Dokken officially formed in 1983 at the onset of what would become known as the glam metal movement. Despite a plethora of lineup changes including the high-profile drama between lead singer Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch, Dokken managed to produce 11 albums, three of which reached platinum certification thanks to the band’s die-hard fans.
Dokken found the most success in the mid-‘80s following their debut album “Breaking the Chains” in 1983, which gained the band a cult-like following despite lagging record sales. Following their debut, Dokken released three platinum albums in a row with 1984’s “Tooth and Nail,” 1985’s “Under Lock and Key,” and 1987’s “Back for the Attack,” which also peaked at no. 13 on the Billboard 200.
Joining Dokken for a special performance March 18 is one of the best female guitarists of all time, Lita Ford. Ford’s career began at a time when women in rock and roll music were often a mere novelty, which may explain the meteoric international success of her first band The Runaways. After disagreements over musical direction with fellow legend Joan Jett, Ford left The Runaways in favor of a solo career in 1980.
Although her debut album, “Out for Blood,” didn’t find commercial success, it allowed Ford the opportunity to truly distance herself from The Runaways and establish her own heavy metal sound and image. Ford carried this sound into her second effort “Dancin’ on the Edge,” which netted her a Grammy nomination in 1984 followed by her third and most successful album “Lita,” which peaked at no. 29 on the Billboard 200. The album earned platinum certification and featured the no. 8 single “Close My Eyes Forever,” a duet with Ozzy Osbourne.
