Carlsbad Caverns National Park is home to 119 caverns that lay beneath the Chihuahuan Desert’s surface. Once referred to as “the Grand Canyon with a roof over it” by famous actor Will Rogers, Carlsbad Caverns is truly a sight to behold. Visitors must secure reservations online or by calling (877) 444-6777, and then purchase tickets at the visitor center upon arrival. You can experience the caverns via two trails with each hike taking over an hour to trek.
The Big Room Trail is home to a variety of stunning cave formations and is a relatively flat path. The Natural Entrance Trail is very steep, but you’ll get to see famous formations like Iceberg Rock and the Whale’s Mouth on this trail. Ranger-guided tours are also offered.
Outside of the caverns, the national park includes a visitor center, hiking trails, and the Bat Flight Program where visitors can learn about the Brazilian free-tailed bats that call Carlsbad Caverns home, and enjoy the spectacle of bats exiting the caverns each evening from late May through October.

Check out this recreation area while in southern New Mexico to see one of the youngest lava flows in the continental US. Thousands of years ago, molten rock filled the Tularosa Basin after the eruption of Little Black Peak. Now, the hardened lava flow covers 125 square miles, is 160 feet thick, varies from 4 to 6 miles wide, and is waiting to be explored by travelers.
The Malpais Nature Trail at Valley of Fires Recreation Area is a fully accessible, paved trail that leads you straight to the lava flow. Along the trail, you may encounter a variety of animals like mule deer, roadrunners, and lizards, and several species of birds ranging from gnat catchers and cactus wrens to turkey vultures and golden eagles. Plant life is abundant and includes a variety of species native to the Chihuahuan desert.

Billy the Kid Scenic Byway is more than just a highway—it’s one of the most immersive things to do in southern New Mexico. You’re transported to the middle of Old West history where famous names like Kit Carson, “Black Jack” Pershing, and the man himself, Billy the Kid trekked.
Inn of the Mountain Gods guests can start in Ruidoso Downs, the location of the Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway Interpretive Center and head east towards Hondo, before traveling northwest towards Lincoln. Shows include classics, such as The Jungle Book, Cats, and Rhythm of the Dance, plus local productions and children’s theater shows. Ticket prices vary from $10 to $95 depending on the show and seats, but tickets for most professional shows start at around $59.
Touring this spectacular building is also an option. See the ins and outs of a performing arts theater that took 15 years to plan and is constructed from more than 1,036 tons of steel and 430 tons of white-flecked stone from Spain. When you’re in Ruidoso with kids, the family amusement parks are a top thing to do on the weekends. Adventure Mountain is a longtime favorite in Ruidoso and is open year-round. Play bazooka ball, climb a rock wall, play black light mini golf, hang out at the arcade, or take a turn in the batting cages. The variety of indoor and outdoor games will keep the family entertained in any weather. They also offer burgers, fries, and shakes so you can refuel and get back to playing.

Winter Park is a well-known tubing spot in the colder months, and the park now offers activities in the summer too. There are snow hill runs designed for small kids and big kids/adults, and a magic carpet on site so you don’t need to hike back to the top. If you’re in the area during summer, tubing and the brand-new mountain coaster are fun for thrill-seeking kids.
The family zipline is 300 feet long and just 30 feet from the ground, so it is a popular choice for ages 4 and up. New Mexico’s first-ever mountain coaster, Screaming Eagle, is opening soon. At 5,100 feet long, it gives riders the flexibility to control their speed, so everyone can enjoy the waves, dips, and 360-degree helix at their own pace.

The New Mexico Museum of Space History is a hit with anyone looking for activities about space or science. Though this is about 40 minutes outside of Ruidoso, touring the interactive exhibits is worth the drive. See authentic space suits, moon rocks, missiles, and listen to the roar of different rocket ships. The nearby New Horizons Dome Theater and Planetarium also offer educational shows about a variety of science topics, from dinosaurs to Apollo 11.
