Alberto Nelson “Al Hurricane” Sanchez is a Latin musician known as the “Godfather of New Mexico Music.” Born in the small town of Dixon, New Mexico, Sanchez had an early interest in music, learning to play guitar at the age of 5 and is now a musical virtuoso. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo early with a performance by Al Hurricane and his son, Al Hurricane Jr., at Inn of the Mountain Gods on Sunday, May 4.
At the age of 12, Hurricane frequently performed at a wishing well in Albuquerque’s Old Town for tips. Eight years later, he released his first album “Mi Saxophone.” He later played guitar for artists like Fats Domino, Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Clanton, and Chubby Checker.
Hurricane has won numerous awards throughout his career including The Lifetime Achievement Award given to him by the New Mexico Hispanic Awards Association, the Governor’s Award for Music in 1993, and most recently, was honored with “Al Hurricane and Family Day” on Cinco de Mayo.
